Advancing Self-Governance in Healthcare: A Step Towards a Better Future
On August 8th, 2022, the Ukrainian Federation of Professional Medical Associations (UFPMO) held a general meeting to discuss the development of self-government. Representatives from various organizations, including the Office of the President, the Ministry of Health, the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC), participated in the meeting.
In addition to the UFPMO, other organizations such as the All-Ukrainian Medical Society and the All-Ukrainian Scientific Union of BPR Dentists shared their vision for the development of self-government. The Draft Law was worked on for over six months, and all members of the UFPMO Association made their corrections on November 18th, 2021, at the Council of Representatives meeting.
During the meeting, Viktor Lyashko, the Minister of Health, noted that although there are differences in approaches to the introduction of self-government, there is an urgent need to start moving in that direction.
The participants of the meeting agreed to adopt the draft law developed by the Ministry of Health in the first reading and revise it before the second reading with the involvement of the entire medical community. The introduction of medical self-governance is the construction of an independent organization that unites the professional community, with real levers of influence on the development of medical care in the state and with effective mechanisms of self-control.
The UFPMO, which represents the interests of more than 82,000 doctors and primary care physicians, more than 100,000 pharmaceutical workers, and more than 100,000 nurses, etc., are actively involved in the development of the Law. The UFPMO takes care of the profession and supports the Draft Law of Ukraine «On self-governance in the field of health care in Ukraine» as a whole, subject to the proposed changes.
